Tree service on Camano Island
Camano Island sits in Island County, over the bridge from Stanwood, and it is the one place on our list you reach across water. That geography is the whole story of the trees. Houses line both shores, Port Susan on the east side and Saratoga Passage on the west, and many of them sit on a bluff with madrona and Douglas fir standing between the deck and the water. Those trees are exposed in a way an inland tree never is, they take wind straight off the passage, and they are usually the same trees somebody would rather look around than look through. Wind and views are the two conversations we have out here, and they pull in opposite directions.

Madrona is the tree that makes Camano different from anywhere else we work. It is beautiful, it is one of the things holding a bluff together, and it drops limbs without a great deal of warning when it is unhappy. A madrona leaning out over a deck or a neighbor's roof is a proper assessment rather than a quick look, and the honest answer is often a reduction and some deadwood work rather than a removal, because the root system on a bluff is doing a job nobody sensible wants to take away.
The other half of the work here is the view, and on Camano the two jobs are one visit. Thinning a crown so air passes through it, and shortening the longest limbs so there is less leverage on the trunk, takes load off a tree standing in the weather and opens a sight line to the water at the same time. Done that way you get both. Done the cheap way, by cutting the heads out of the conifers in front of the window, you get a closed view again in three summers and a heavier, weaker crown than you started with, on the most exposed tree on the lot. We will not do the second one.

Questions from Camano Island
Camano is in Island County. Do you actually come out here?
Yes. It is over the bridge from Stanwood, which is already in the area we work, so the run is a known quantity rather than a special trip. It is further than Arlington or Marysville, so the smallest job we will take on the island is a little larger, simply because a truck and a crew have to be worth the drive. Tell us what you have when you call and we will be straight with you about whether it makes sense.
The trees between my house and the water take the wind first. What can be done?
Quite a lot, and none of it is topping. Thinning the crown so the wind passes through rather than pushing against it, and shortening the longest limbs so there is less leverage on the trunk, reduces the force the tree has to carry without taking the tree away. That is wind sail reduction, and it is the service people out here have most often never heard of. What it will not do is make a tree certain, and if the root plate is already lifting on one side we will tell you that instead.
Have a certified arborist look at it
Tell us what the trees are doing and we will come out, walk the property with you and write it up. The visit is free, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and you get an itemized estimate you can hold on to.
